Education Press Awards

14th of May 2004, Bucharest - Recently, within a press conference at the headquarters of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO, there has been launched the first edition of Education Press Awards, competition that aims to find a professional standard for the journalists who act in this field, also pointing out the high quality level of this segment of the media.

Organized by Romanian National Commission for UNESCO, together with the Foundation for Stimulating Technical and Scientific Creations and with the help of SIVECO Romania, the competition aims to become a constant in Romanian journalism.

The competition has four sections: TV (reportage, Talk-show) and web-site, radio, written press, daily papers, journals and books for science dissemination. For every section there are prizes of 1000 euros. All the prizes and expenses regarding the awarding will comes from sponsorship.

The awards will be given every year, in June, within an event organized at National Commission for UNESCO.

The competition's jury, chaired by Professor Nicolae Manolescu (Manager of Romania Libera) include: Professor Alexandru Mironov (General Secretary of Romania Commission for UNESCO), Professor Mihai Miron (Executive President Professional Journalists Union), Melania Mandras Vergu (Manager of Youth-Education Department within Adevarul), Andrei Banc(President of Scientific Journalists Association) and Serban Ursu (Expert within Romanian Commission for UNESCO)

"We can say that with this initiative we found the right course" declared Professor Alexndru Mironov, General Secretary of Romanian Commission for UNESCO. "After we gave the awards for Science, last winter, now we have the chance of awarding the journalists who act in educational field, who with modesty and abnegation assume themselves an important training mission. We are happy to have already received works from all over the country".

According with the regulations, in the competition can participate writers, journalists, editors, managers of different puplications, managers of radio broadcast or television programs, producers, web-sites creators, researchers and science people who, in the previous year distinguished themselves due to their activity of bringing the science, research and technology in front of the public,

"For us, educational segment of the press is a true partner - a critic one but constructive, strict and a realist one." said Radu Jugureanu, responsible for educational materials within SIVECO Romania. "We are honoured to be alongside with Romanian National Commission for UNESCO in this initiative, an initiative that aims to point out the true value of the journalist".
