Over 4,200 members of the teaching staff, as well as auxiliary staff from pre-university education will be trained within a project co-funded from the European Social Fund, through participation in courses dedicated to extending the IT skills, aiming at maximal usage of the IT labs that all high schools in Romania have been endowed with, and for acquiring the necessary skills for new jobs in the education system.

Having as target group the teaching staff and the administrative staff from high schools, the projects meets the demanding requirements of Romanian education system: creation of an efficient environment in order to increase access to quality education and developing key professional skills that would facilitate integration on the labour market. The project's objective is thus to contribute to professional development of the human resources in the education system, through acquiring of modern qualifications, adapted to the current context of the information society and to labour market requirements.

The training programme proposed within the project is divided into two parts, each of them having two modules. The first course will be attended by the over 4,200 members of the target group - namely teaching staff and the administrative staff from pre- university education -, while the second courses will be attended by 84 learners selected from the ones accredited after finishing Ist Course. The team of 84 members of the teaching staff and the administrative staff will be taken over by the education system's structures, having to act as key resources at county level, aiming at managing and maintaining the IT laboratories and at supplying technical support.

The first course will provide students with a number of 25 professional transferable credits, while the second one a number of 15 professional transferable credits.

The training activities will be carried out directly, as well as through usage of software applications developed within the project.

Among the concrete benefits brought by the project, both for the target groups and for the overall education system are the following:

• development of advanced digital skills by the members of the target group, in using IT for knowledge and problems solving;
• improving the lifelong training system of the teaching staff and administrative staff in high schools and their empowering both in acquiring skills necessary for new positions in the education system, and in order to prepare an updated, qualitative educational offer;
• using at full capacity (using e-learning platforms, developing lessons on these platforms, software development etc.) of the IT laboratories the high schools in Romania have been endowed with through the IT-based Education System (S.E.I.);
• the training program developed, including the software applications, will remain at the disposal of the education system also after project's completion;
• teaching material and the way of implementing the training program may form a generic model, in order to multiply the approach to the entire teaching staff and ancillary staff responsible for IT labs administration, but also for other staff categories from education /other activity sectors.

The Agency for Management of the National IT network for Education and Research (administrator and developer of the RoEduNet network, that ensures data communication services for the research and academic institutions of all degrees in Romania and member of the GEANT consortium, a network interconnecting all the research and education networks in the EU Member States) has launched, starting with September 1st, 2010, implementation of the project "Extension of IT skills to the pre-university education - efficient use of the IT laboratories".

The project's funding is ensured from the funds of the Sectorial Operational Program for Human Resources Development 2007-2013 (POS-DRU), through the funding contract POSDRU/87/1.3/S/62260, and falls under the Priority Axis 1, Major Filed of Intervention 1.3 "Human resources development in education and professional training".

The project will run for a period of 3 years and is being implemented in partnership with the following companies:

• SC SIVECO Romania SA;
• SC Europrojects Experts Group SRL.

Partnership within the project has been developed depending on the project's activities, being selected those organizations having expertise, experience and the resources necessary for reaching the project's objective under best conditions. The context the project is developed in is given by the innovative trend in the lifelong training system, as the structure of training programs become more flexible and diversified, within the prevalence of the system of transferable credits in conformity to the national and European standards, usage of interactive training strategies, results and student- centred. The projects meets practically the so- up-to-date demands of sustainable development and, by default, to the exigencies of policies and strategies set at European level regarding lifelong training of teaching staff and taking the responsibility towards future generations.
