Romanian culture and education accepted the challenge raised by the information society

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

The Romanian National Commission for UNESCO recently organized the “Symposium dedicated to Virtual Library’ at Central University Library. The event brought together public figures, institutions and companies involved in promoting the use of technology in educational and cultural processes.

The agenda of the symposium included the presentations of Monica Manolache – Assistant Counselor at The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Prof. Univ. Dr. Doina Banciu - General Manager ICI (Central Institute for Information Technology), Radu Jugureanu – SIVECO Romania, Dan Matei - Manager CIMEC and Prof. Univ. Dr. Valentin Plesu from UPB (Polytechnic University Bucharest).

The common ground of all the presentations referred to the advantages that the virtual environment offers to the pupils, teachers and to society in general.

Virtual libraries, interactive lessons, computers, Internet are only few examples that facilitate the search, discovery and knowledge process.

The projects made available to the public by the Central University Library prove one more time the transformation that the knowledge process has reached once the Internet came around and the use of technology in many domains – information is available when you need it.

“Education and culture are two sectors that managed to adapt to the technology era, through a fast and rapid process, with excellent results. We are proud that in a very short time we advanced in terms of virtual library, computers, schools with Internet, master programs based on modern eLearning solutions, representing 100% Romanian educational content, awarded as the best in the world, and I mention here the award received last year by AeL lessons at World Summit Award on The Information Society”, says Radu Jugureanu, eContent Project Manager la SIVECO Romania.

The Romanian educational system accepted and aligned itself with the demands of the future society, and the IT Based Educational System is just a solid prove of these transformations. This is a project initiated by The Ministry of Education and Research, whose strategic objective is to digitalize the educational society and also to use the technology as a support system for the educational environment.

Through the SEI program, the Romanian school stepped forward in front of the society as a whole as regards the information society. It remains to be seen which will be the mechanisms that will make possible a generalization of these positive experiences at the society level. “, says Alexandru Mironov, General Secretary CNR UNESCO.
