Romanian pupils won the 1st place at the Central European Olympiad in Informatics and the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics

Recently, in Dresden, Germany, took place the 15th edition of the Central European Olympiad in Informatics (CEOI).
Romanian students have dominated the competition this year, showing a high level of training, and won an impressive number of medals. With a gold medal, two silver ones and a bronze, the Romanian team ranked first in the unofficial top on nations.

CEOI is a competition initiated by Romania in 1994 and is hosted every year, by one of the member countries -Croatia, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania.
The increased difficulty of the subjects as well as the competitors’ quality recommend the Central European Olympiad in Informatics, as one of the most challenging science competitions at the international level.

Romania's team was composed of: Cosmin Gheorghe gold medalist, Bogdan Tataroiu, silver medalist, Paul-Dan Baltescu, silver medalist - all students at the International Computer High School of Bucharest, Stefan-Alexandru Filip, bronze medalist, student at the Tudor Vianu IT National College. Two teachers led the team: Emanuela Cerchez from "Grigore C. Moisil" Iasi (team-leader) and Zoltan Szabo, from the "Petru Maior" School in Reghin (deputy team leader).

" The Central European Olympiad in Informatics brought a new confirmation of the value of the Romanian IT education. The pupils’ results give us hope that this year Romania will get remarkable outcomes in the International Olympiad of Informatics too", said Emanuela Cerchez.

The same team will represent Romania in the International Olympiad in Informatics, which will be held in Egypt between 16-23 August.

Between 8 and 13 July, Romania had representatives at Shumen in Bulgaria, where was held the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics.

The Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics is a competition addressed to pupils from the secondary education, coming from the Balkan countries. Being present in this event represents a real opportunity for future participants in prestigious international IT competitions. Competitors have an opportunity to evaluate their knowledge and acquire experience, the regulation of the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics being similar to those of the International Olympiad of Informatics.

The strong Romanian team was led by 2 teachers: Marinel Serban from "Grigore C. Moisil" High School in Iasi as team leader and Elena Daniela Lica from the National College Ion Luca Caragiale in Ploiesti, as deputy team leader.

Despite the very strong competition, with an impressive average score of 540 points, the Romanian team ranked first in this competition. All the members of the team won medals. The gold medalists are: Radu Voroneanu from the National College Mihai Viteazul, Iasi (who got a maximum score of 600 points out of 600 possible), Andrei Purice from the National College Ion Luca Caragiale, Ploiesti; silver medalists: Vlad Gavrila from the International Computer High School of Bucharest, Teodor-Anton Pripoae from General School. Nr. 56 "Jose Marti", Bucharest.

It is worth mentioning that all the four pupils from the Romanian team present in the Central European Olympiad in Informatics as well as the golden medalists in the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics were among the finalists in the .campion 2008 edition, the competition organized by SIVECO Romania. The recognition of the .campion contest grows year by year due to the international performances achieved by the pupils present in the finals. Thus, the main objective of the contest, to help the development of these young pupils’ potential in obtaining future performances in IT, is carried out every year and the results are increasingly impressive.

The .campion project supported by SIVECO Virtual Center for Excellency –initiated by SIVECO Romania in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Research and Youth is a training program for performance in computer science, supported by well-known teachers. The development of the .campion program starts from the idea that information technology is viable, applicable and with concrete results in modernizing Romanian society.
