Bucharest, 31st January 2007 – On the 30th of January 2007, the "Jules Verne" (Fifth) Edition of the SIVECO Cup, National Educational Software Contest, was officially launched. The contest is dedicated to pupils with aptitudes, abilities, and an interest in developing educational software, as well as teachers involved in creating innovative teaching-learning solutions.

The official opening ceremony was held at the No. 7 "Sfanta Maria" School from Timisoara, whose enthusiastic and innovative teams of pupils, coordinated by teachers Vasile Roman and Adriana Roman, have participated in every edition of the contest. On this occasion, the school community was presented with an Excellency award for outstanding results obtained in promoting the SEI (IT-Based Educational System) Program. The prize consisted of a SMART Board interactive whiteboard and a video projector.

The SIVECO Cup is organized by SIVECO Romania, under the patronage of the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research, in partnership with PC Magazine and the "Science and Technique” Magazine. The organizers of the contest intend to stimulate, reward, and showcase the creative talent of pupils in developing educational software. Just like the last year, the SIVECO Cup is intended for teacher-pupil teams made up of to three pupils from grades 5th through 12th, a scientific content coordinator, and an IT coordinator.

"The associative character of the teacher-pupil teams stimulates, between them, the interaction and collaboration. The student-centered approach of the competition advances the pupil's knowledge construction process. This approach reflects the application of a cooperative learning teaching strategy that is beneficial for both pupils and teachers." declared Radu Jugureanu, eContent Manager, SIVECO Romania.

This year's participants can opt to develop projects inspired by the work of Jules Verne, from one of the following fields of study: scientific, social, cultural, literary. The theme can be based on elements of the school curriculum.

The online stage of the competition runs between 29th January and 31st May 2007. During this interval, the participants can e-mail modules from their proposals to and thus benefit from the scientific, didactic, and pedagogic support of members of the evaluation committee. The evaluation committee acts as a mentor, by being involved in removing possible errors identified in the contestants' strategies. Their assistance will not incur any modifications in the teams' scores. The application must be accompanied by the due documentation and by a short description of the project's theme.

A minimum of 15 teams (each presenting one project) will be selected to compete in the final. The evaluated work for each team will be the last version of the project sent in by the 31st of May 2007.The selected teams will be competing in the final between the 7th and the 10th of June 2007.
