SIVECO Romania is developing a portal for cancer research

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

ACGT project aims to develop an infrastructure for using clinical and genomic expertise in cancer research.

Bucharest, 11 November 2009 - Advances in post genomic research have created significant opportunities for offering personalized treatment and better health care services to the population at large. At the same time clinical trials have become a bottleneck in terms of complexity and performance, which prevents them from using the latest results of genomic research.

Translational research provides the answer, allowing both the implementation of laboratory results in the clinical area (to be used by clinicians involved in clinical trials) and the research of clinical data throughout the duration of the clinical trials. In this area, there is a need for an efficient information infrastructure that provides all parties access to needed services and facilitates interaction and information exchange while being in line with all relevant ethical and legal guidelines.

A research project aimed at defining and creating an information platform support medical research - in which SIVECO Romania works as a partner of prestigious international bodies - is Advancing Clinic-Genomic Trials on Cancer (ACGT).

The project targets clinicians - with a management platform for clinical trials - ObTiMA - and researchers in the field of bio-informatics and data mining - through an integrated platform of services available through a single portal - ACGT Portal.

The platform developed in the project enables delivery of innovative services to both researchers and clinicians in cancer research. The project's research targets two major cancer types: breast cancer and nephroblastoma in children and adolescents.

SIVECO Romania coordinates the project's training workpackage - collaborating with HealthGrid and the other partners in organizing the project's training activities and training materials, including the "ACGT Handbook" Wiki platform that allows the involvement of all the users of the ACGT platform to improve information about the services.

Also, SIVECO Romania develops under the supervision of the ACGT Technical Management Committee (coordinated by FORTH and Fraunhofer - IAIS) the ACGT portal (http://acgt.siveco.ro) that acts as a main user-entry point to all the software services developed in the project.

Partners in the ACGT Project: ERCIM - INRIA Institut National de Recherché en Informatique et en Automatique - HealthGrid (FR), FORTH Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas), A. Persidis & SIA OE - BioVista, University of Crete - Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (GR), University van Amsterdam, Philips Electronics Nederland BV (NL), Association Hospitaliere Brussels - Center Hospitalier Universitaire Bordet - Custodix - Facultes Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix (BE), Institut Suisse de Bioinformatique (CH), Lunds Universitet (SE), Universidad de Malaga - Universidad Polytechnic de Madrid (ES), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der angewandten Forschung (FHG-IBMT, FHG-IAIS) - Universitaet Hannover - Universitaet des Saarland - Universitaet Hamburg (DE), Instytut Chemii Biooganicznej pan w Poznaniu (PL), The Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Oxford (UK), Hokkaido University (JP), IEO - Instituto Europeo di Oncology Ltd. (IT) SIVECO Romania SA (RO).

Contracting Authority for the ACGT project is the European Commission - contract no.: FP6/2004/IST-026996. The total budget of the project is 16,747,206 euros, over the period 01.02.2006-31.07.2010.
